The mission of QAW is to provide the highest possible standards of education, which enables every student to achieve excellence and develop as an independent critical thinker, a lifelong learner, and a responsible citizen. QAW founded in 2011 with an enrollment of 220 students in Pre-k to Grade 2. The school adds one grade level each year and will continue to expand one grade level or more annually to reach Grade 12 no later than 2022. The campus is located about 20 miles south of Doha in the seaside village of Al Wakra, with plans for a new facility to be completed by the 2016-2017 school year. The current facility sits on a beautiful campus with outdoor facilities including a football pitch, tennis court, basketball court, and covered play areas. Indoor facilities include bright and spacious classrooms with SMART Boards, a library with 20,000 English and 10,000 Arabic titles, an art studio, a music room, gym, and an IT lab. The school is currently seeking candidacy for accreditation with the Council of International Schools (CIS), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP). The management and development of the school is overseen by a board of governors.
Courses and curriculum:
Qatar Academy Al-Wakra written curriculum based on up-to-date international standards. These standards represent what QAW believes to be best in both English language curriculum standards and SEC Arabic standards. The text books and resources that support the standards are consistent throughout the grade levels, which create a horizontally and vertically aligned curriculum. We utilize the following standards in each curricular area:
● English Language Arts: Common Core State Standards
● Math: Common Core State Standards
● Science: Science Content Standards for California Public Schools
● Pre K-3 and Pre K-4: Creative Curriculum
● Music: Georgia Music Standards
● PE / Health: Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum
● Arabic Language Arts: Supreme Education Council of Qatar
● Islamic Studies: Supreme Education Council of Qatar
● Qatar History: Supreme Education Council of Qatar
● Technology Integration: National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS)
● Art: Washington State Curriculum Standards
English Language Arts and Arabic Language Arts are both taught daily with equal focus to ensure students are competent in both languages. Islamic Studies and Qatar History are also taught during the Arabic language portion of the day, further reinforcing Arabic language skills. The balance of Arabic and English instructional standards ensures our students will be prepared for post-secondary pursuits in Qatar or abroad.
